Review: The futility of war was one of Polish director Andrzej Wajda's major themes, and he explored it from nearly every perspective imaginable, using storytelling styles which range from the strictly commercial to those focusing more on symbolic imagery. As this film opens it is 1939, and war seems to be only a distant possibility to a group of vacationing young Polish Lithuanians who are seen greeting their Lithuanian Catholic and Jewish neighbors respectfully. In particular, Witek, a young man hoping to pass his final exams so as to begin university study, is having a bit of a lark, attempting to woo a lovely fellow student, and braving a shotgun blast from her protective father. He and his fellows are full of foolhardy and pompous talk about war and death. Meanwhile, Polish troops are mobilizing to fight the Germans, and the impending storm of war overshadows everything. One of the most idyllic scenes of young love ever committed to film (in the opinion of one reviewer) graces this film, and the story closes just as the war is beginning in earnest. - Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Review: A comedy on a typical children summer camp from the socialist time, telling the truth about it: combination of strange cynical leaders, absent-minded young assistants with complexes, teenage girls desperately in love with them etc. What a pioneer camp pretended to be and what it really was about. All this produces many embarrassing situations. - IMDb

Review: 1952, Paris. Nadia, a Red Diaper baby, has a sister, Polish parents, and at 15 is an active Communist. When cops beat her during an anti-American demonstration, she's rescued by a "Match" photographer. As the friendship becomes a love affair and her slogans are tested by new knowledge and emotion, some of the Red youth want to expel her. When she goes with Stéphane to a seaside photo shoot, her father goes to the police. Stéphane faces charges, so leaving to cover the war in Indochina looks appealing. In a parallel story, Nadia's mother meets again her prewar lover, released from Siberia, who challenges the French Reds with very real scars and word of Stalin's anti-Semitism. - IMDb

Review: After his mother's death, Pierre decides to leave his village and go to work as a seasonal laborer on the coast. He finds a room at Jeanne's, a captain's wife, and experiences anew each day how different the living conditions are for coastal residents: the men are not at home for a large part of the year, the women must fend entirely for themselves, and yet solidarity among the fishing families is great. Pierre falls in love with beautiful Marie, whose fiancé died during the last big catch. Pierre suspects that it is only as a seaman that he can win Marie and decides to follow the calling of the sea. After some smaller jobs in the port, he finally signs up on the "Charmeuse" and takes part in the fishers' several-month-long "spring catch." On board, he becomes familiar with the harshness of life on the high seas, the friendships and enmities, the quick alternation of joy and suffering, the nearness of death and the many facets of a fascinating and uncontrollable nature, the likes of which he has never seen before. During Pierre's long absence, Marie becomes conscious of her love for him. When Pierre finally returns, the two say "I do." - IMDb

Review: According to reviewers, an expert cast of character actors make this bedroom farce eminently watchable, despite glitches in the storytelling. In the story, a group of old friends and relations gather each year to celebrate Christmas together on the ski resort of Chamonix. They don't do much skiing, however, but mostly explore their own and their friends' and relations' romantic quandries. In the story, the widower family patriarch Leo (Daniel Gelin) announces his engagement to Francoise (Anouk Aimee), which provokes all sorts of reactions in his sons Max and Simon (Gerard Lanvin and Andre Dussollier) and their families, because their own marriages are really rocky. Among the complications: Simon's son is infatuated with Max's daughter, Max is trying to make time with a woman who works locally, Simon has brought along his mistress, family friend Stephane is having trouble with his girlfriend, who threatens suicide if he won't marry her, and a difficult time is had by all during this merrymaking season. - Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
